Divers pulled a 16-year-old boy from the Cuyahoga River in Cuyahoga Falls on Wednesday afternoon.Police Sgt. Ed Caswell said two teens were swimming in the river near the Doodlebug Bridge on Bailey Road near Front Street around 4 p.m. when one of the swimmers struggled, went under and did not resurface.Caswell said the teen had no heartbeat when divers recovered him around 4:45 p.m. The teen was taken to Summa Western Reserve Hospital in Cuyahoga Falls by paramedics. The body was identified as Davion McCail of Akron. He was pronounced dead at 5:26 p.m. at the hospital. The Summit County Medical Examiner’s office said McCail’s friend ran for help after being unable to pull McCail from the water.Fire Chief Paul Moledor said Summit County’s Special Operations Team, along with divers from other fire departments, including Akron, Green, Macedonia, Bath Township and Stow, were called to assist in the search.Moledor said witnesses were able to give rescuers a good location for concentrating their recovery efforts.Chet Meredith, who lives in Cuyahoga Falls, said when he arrived at the river Wednesday afternoon to fish, he watched the teens jumping into the water from rocks near the shoreline.Meredith said the teens moved farther down the river once he and a friend started fishing.“They were jumping into the water near the first arch closest to the rocks and when they stood up, the water only went to just below their chest,” he said. Over the sound of the river flowing by, Meredith said, he was unable to hear any cries for help.“If I did [hear something] I would have did something,” he said.Caswell said it is not unusual this time of the year to find teens swimming in the river.
